Allergy to insect venoms (bees, wasps, ants) can cause life-threatening anaphylaxis, tightness of the larynx, swellings of the tongue, face (angioedema), hives. Desensitization is available for bees and wasps, but regrettably not to ants, owing to lack of government support over the last three decades. Adrenaline in the form of an EPIPEN injection may have to be carried by those who endure serious reactions.
